Use two pads of same length (3/4 or full) or mix and match them for unlimited flexibility. Combining clothes with pads (layered in main compartment or rolled in the wings) adds warmth without adding pack weight or bulk.

Caution: These numbers are based on very generalized personal observations. They are NOT manufacturers recommendations. Each person is different, so use these numbers for general guidelines only. Combining or stacking pads for use in Segmented Pad Extenders results in cumulative R-Values and warmth. Remember to test all sleeping pads for your own comfort level in a safe location before heading to the backcountry.

From the Creator of the Segmented Pad Extender:
I have been using the SPE with great success this past winter on my hammock camping trips- the Pinhoti Trail, the Florida National Scenic Trail and the Benton MacKaye Trail. I have slept warm in my hammock down to temperatures in the high teens using it. I even let a couple of my hiking buddies try them out to add warmth and cushioning in tents, on hard shelter floors and even for their first hammock camping experience. They both liked them in all situations and I was particularly satisfied that they came away with a positive first time hammock camping experience, even in cool wet conditions.

The SPE is so versatile that it is difficult to describe, and yet it is so simple in concept that most folk's reaction is going to be "why didn't I think of that?" The standard SPE is made of light weight nylon fabric that is sewn into five compartments, a main twenty inch wide compartment flanked by four smaller compartments, or wings. The wings are strategically placed on both sides of the main compartment using baffles to insure a close fit. The wings for the standard unit are sized to allow up to a 10 inch width increase to the 20 inch wide main compartment (there are eight wing compartments on the large size SPE that allow for up to a 20 inch width increase). Basically, for most backpackers you can pretty much use what you already have in the main compartment of the SPE, 20 inch wide self inflating pads or 20 inch wide closed cell foam pads or both, and then you can add clothing or other insulating material as well. Small pads of up to 1 inch thick by 5 inches wide can be inserted into the wings, or articles of clothing can be used or pads and clothing together can be used.

With this, you can customize your installation as conditions require, it's pretty neat and it isn't just for staying warm in a hammock. It makes stacking pads easy for winter tent users or some of us older guys that find shelter floors are just too hard on our bones.
